Ongeneeslijke longkanker ‘Sinds ik ziek ben voel ik me gelukkiger dan ooit’ Eva Hermans-Kroot (25) kreeg 2,5 jaar geleden de diagnose ongeneeslijke longkanker. Dankzij verschillende behandelingen in het Erasmus MC is ze er nog steeds, tegen alle verwachtingen in. Al kroop ze een paar keer door het oog van de naald. Aan levenslust ontbreekt het haar zelden. ‘Ik vind het leven gewoon te mooi en te leuk.’
Pilot Wereldprimeur: longkankeroperatie met augmented reality Chirurgen van het Erasmus MC hebben als eersten ter wereld een longtumor verwijderd met hulp van augmented reality. Die techniek maakt het mogelijk om tijdens een robot-geassisteerde operatie virtuele beelden van de tumor, bloedvaten en luchtwegen over de long te projecteren. ‘Zo vinden we veiliger en beter de weg in het binnenste van de patiënt.’
Levende geneesmiddelen Nieuw laboratorium biedt heel veel mensen hoop In het Erasmus MC is de nieuwe productieruimte voor ATMP’s in gebruik genomen. Advanced Therapy Medicinal Products zijn levende geneesmiddelen die bestaan uit (genetisch) gemodificeerde cellen of weefsel. In het Erasmus MC worden deze middelen ontwikkeld en in klinisch onderzoek ingezet voor de behandeling van diverse soorten tumoren.
DNA-test KWF-beurs voor onderzoek naar eierstokkanker Een team onder leiding van gynaecologisch-oncoloog Heleen van Beekhuizen ontvangt een KWF-subsidie van 1,5 miljoen voor onderzoek naar eierstokkanker. Met deze beurs gaan ze onderzoeken of een DNA-test kan voorspellen welke patiënten met eierstokkanker goed reageren op PARP-remmers.
Acute myeloïde leukemie Omgeving van stamcellen beïnvloedt het ontstaan van leukemie De omgeving van beenmerg-stamcellen speelt een sleutelrol bij de ontwikkeling en behandeling van leukemie. Dat blijkt uit onderzoek van internist-hematoloog prof. Marc Raaijmakers. Zijn onderzoeksgroep bracht voor het eerst de interactie tussen stamcellen en hun omgeving in kaart bij patiënten met acute myeloïde leukemie.
